Reading in Second Grade
Our reading program is made up of a variety of instructional pieces. We have phonics skills that we learn each week. Most often these are easily seen through our spelling words. We also have a grammar focus, such as contractions. We work on fluency, expression, and comprehension skills daily. In our Wonders program along with spelling words we have weekly vocabulary and high frequency words that we work on as well. We do some activities on our own, some with our partners, in whole group, or in small groups at the teacher table. Here's what we are working on this week:
Vocabulary
This weeks words are as shown.
The students will be tested on these words (definitions not spelling) at the end of the week.
Parent Letter
Here is our weekly parent letter from the reading program:
This week our class will be focusing on plant myths and facts. We’ll learn how plants keep our world working.
Here are some activities that you can do with your child to help reinforce the skills we’ll be practicing.
Word Workout
-
Words to Know: sentence clues You will work with your child to make up sentences, using two of the list words in each sentence.
-
Spelling/Phonics: closed syllables and open syllables You and your child will write the list words on index cards. Your child will pick a card from the pile, say the word, and you’ll spell it. Then you’ll switch. Finally, you will sort the cards by vowel sounds. This week’s phonics words contain closed and open syllables.
Comprehension: theme
Your child will read theme statements and then match the statements to pictures.
